Hidden history
Found, Not Built
A granite dome on an isthmus between two lakes, built after the previous capitol burned in 1904. It was designed by George B. Post.
Fire, then a grander capitol
The 1904 fire cleared the old capitol, and a much larger granite one replaced it, built wing by wing around the ruins.
Four wings, one dome
The X-plan with a central dome is the same plan found in capitols from Pennsylvania to Washington State.
Architect of record
George B. Post (born 1837) was about 69 when credited with the design in 1906. The Architects of Record page asks how often a young or little-known name delivers a landmark.
Questions worth asking
- Why does a fire so often come right before a grander building?
Possible original uses
- Capitol or civic palace
