1908 Messina earthquake

The open question

A fire wipes out the records and the old buildings in one go. Who decided what got rebuilt, and in what style?

On the record

The cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria were nearly destroyed and around 120,000 people died, making it the deadliest earthquake in the history of Europe. Most of the baroque buildings had been destroyed in the earthquake of 1783, and had been rebuilt in neo-classical style in the early nineteenth century.
