Burning of Edinburgh

The open question

The fire took the old town, and something grander went up within a few years. Who had the money, the masons and the stone ready that fast?

On the record

The Provost of Edinburgh was compelled to allow the English to sack Leith and Edinburgh, and the city was burnt on 7 May. Henry VIII had also asked him to destroy St Andrews, but Hertford pointed out the extra distance would be troublesome.
