Burned and Rebuilt? · Columbia, United States
Capture of Columbia
The open question
Burned, cleared and rebuilt bigger. What did the old town look like, and why are there so few pictures of it?
On the record
While more homes were burned than businesses, the amount of homes burned represented a small portion of the city, while nearly every business in town was destroyed. Mayor Goodwyn, on Howard's advice, suggested that destitute residents flee to the countryside for sustenance as soon as possible, as it would be some time before the town could be rebuilt.
