Burned and Rebuilt? · Coventry, United Kingdom (approx.)
Coventry Blitz
The open question
The fire took the old town, and something grander went up within a few years. Who had the money, the masons and the stone ready that fast?
On the record
The high explosive bombs and the larger air-mines hindered the Coventry fire brigade and were intended to damage roofs, making it easier for the incendiary bombs to fall into buildings and ignite them. It was after this raid that the then-Mayor of Coventry, Alfred Robert Grindlay, led the early reconstruction of much of the city centre.
