Burned and Rebuilt? · Northampton, United Kingdom
Great Fire of Northampton
The open question
The fire took the old town, and something grander went up within a few years. Who had the money, the masons and the stone ready that fast?
On the record
Three quarters of the town was destroyed, 11 people died and about 700 families were made homeless. The majority of its buildings were made of timber, wattle and daub and thatch, densely packed along narrow medieval streets, though a number of houses and churches were built of stone.
