Mud Flood · Greece
Akrotiri (prehistoric city)
The open question
Here the cause is written down: a volcano. Does the depth look like the 'mud flood' buildings where no cause is given?
On the record
The settlement was destroyed during the Theran eruption sometime in the 16th century BC, and was buried in volcanic ash, which helped preserve its fine frescoes. Marinatos's choice of the site proved to be correct and a few hours into the excavation, the remains of the buried city began to be discovered.
