The open question
Whole buildings under sand or silt. How fast does that really happen, and why do the records rarely say?
On the record
Since the Roman system of drains and sewers was not maintained, the ruins became flooded and covered with mud and sediment. As it was never built over by settlements after the Roman period but was partly buried by deposits washed from the hills above, much of it was preserved.
