Leptis Magna

The open question

Whole buildings under sand or silt. How fast does that really happen, and why do the records rarely say?

On the record

After being abandoned, the city was remarkably preserved as it lay buried beneath layers of sand dunes. In the early 1930s, Italian archeological research was able to show again the buried remains of nearly all the city.
