Roman Forum, the 'Cow Field'

The open question

How does the centre of an empire disappear under enough earth to graze cows on?

On the record

In the Middle Ages most of the Forum's monuments were buried under debris and the place was called Campo Vaccino, the cattle field. Claude Lorrain's 1636 painting shows how deeply the buildings were buried.
