Underground Atlanta
The open question
Five whole blocks went underground in one project. Why were the old shopfronts kept instead of torn out?
On the record
In 1928 the 'twin bridges' viaduct raised Pryor, Central, Wall and Alabama streets by one and a half storeys and covered a five-block area. Merchants moved upstairs and turned their old ground-floor shopfronts into basements.
